LOL. I forgot to mention several other facts which may be pertinent:
(1) the Angus cow which had been hanging around (solitarily) near the
Molongolo end of the backwater has, as hypothesised by Steve, given
birth to a healthy calf. She had that sort of head-up, wild-eyed look
that new cow mums sometimes have. COGites should not take their cattle
dogs near the end of the backwater because she would, IMHO, charge. The
calf was sleeping very, very close to one of the preferred perches of
the Azure Kingfisher(s). What do we know about bovine/Azure Kingfisher
interactions? Did the new cow mum chase away the Azure Kingfisher?
(2) While, once again, trudging disconsolately from the backwater, I
came across a pair of funky glasses. The frame is seriously bent. Was
the owner chased into the Molongolo by an enraged new cow mum? Has a
COGite dropped his (or her) glasses while on a Wild Azure Kingfisher
Chase? If the latter, please let me know and we can arrange for the
return of the glasses.

Obviously there were two kingfishers, and both left at the same time. Could
this be evidence of breeding?

Yesterday morning Steve and Lyndon were at the hide site, and I was at the
backwater site at the same time and neither party recorded the Azure
Kingfisher.
