Harvey's message, and a comment by Ian Fraser on my blog, caused me to check out the COG Birdinfo page about the species.   Two particularly interesting snippets there are this map of sightings around 'Canberra

And having been around that long it was unlikely not to still be there after work yesterday. So I went and twitched it at 17:20 h though it did take me half an hour to find it. It was in a mostly leafless oak tree in the small car park to the east of the National Film & Sound Archive building, about 50 m from where Martin saw it, and it flew across McCoy Cct to some other bare trees beside an old low building.

While looking for the butcherbird, I was attracted by several noisy Noisy Miners to a tree on the (western) corner of Liversidge Street and Ellery Crescent in which an Eastern Barn Owl was trying to avoid attention (17:15 h). It would wobble / shiver from side to side quite noticeably when being mobbed but was otherwise very calm and not prepared to move.
