There needs to be something to justify the dopey Wood Duck name. Yes they
are usually on the ground but (less often) perch in trees and usually (or
only?) nest in tree hollows. So may be or likely they were looking for nest
sites.

West Deakin: Not something I've seen before, three Australian Wood Ducks
sitting on a branch in our Eucalyptus meliodora. One male, one female, the
third I didn't see well enough to identify. They flew off making
clucking/quacking noises.
