I saw a red browed finch taking downy feathers into trees at Uriarra Crossing last Monday.

It's something that the Australian finches all do from time to time, I the nesting season I assume they are building, any other time I assume their just trying to recapture that good feeling :-)

Interesting I have also seen weavers do this in Africa and se Asia, in the latter area this was a useful habit because it enabled me to spot two spp I might not have seen otherwise (baya and streaked weavers). Easier to see a flying straw than a flying small bird at a distance.

An interesting idea, Con.  I didn’t know they did that.  I’ll consult HANZAB.  I‘ll also explore the area that I saw the bird fly to.

Might they be building roosting nests?

A Red-browed Finch turned up in a large lerp-guzzling MFF at my home this morning (lots of Tasmanian Silvereyes amongst them).  But it was carrying a long grass stalk.  Why at this stage of the season, I wonder?  And how should I record it, as NB?  It is more in the nature of parrot-like IH behaviour.
