David,
This
species is one of several finches that uses a grass stem as part of its
courtship dance. It is also one of several finches that will build roosting a
nest that are not used for breeding. Thus an obs like that is whilst
curious in timing is not, by itself, evidence of NB, as constituting a breeding
record. That doesn't mean it isn't but I suggest more info is needed to call it
a breeding record.
This species

Fairy-wrens.

A Red-browed Finch turned up in a large lerp-guzzling MFF at
my home this morning (lots of Tasmanian Silvereyes amongst them). But it
was carrying a long grass stalk. Why at this stage of the season, I
wonder? And how should I record it, as NB? It is more in the nature
of parrot-like IH behaviour.
