Half the distance for the Prime Minister, John, when he takes a break from his busy day. Just passing on information, as we all try to do. May I mention with apologies that I, along with others, have until now been guilty of the repeated resending of Tobias’s excellent, but oversized, graphic, for which he promptly apologised at the time? It got lost beneath the layering text. From: John Harris [ Sent: Saturday, 11 January 2014 2:55 PM To: Geoffrey Dabb; Subject: Re: [canberrabirds] Freckled Duck Half the distance for whom, Geoffrey? It may come as a surprise to some that there are hardy folk who actually reside in remote Gungahlin. For us, The valley Ponds and other fascinating Gungahlin sites are far closer than QSW - as the duck flies, anyway! I am glad I found this duck in the first place – two of them originally and I saw them arrive. There seems to be only one now, a juvenile, but it’s continued presence has enabled several people to see a Freckled Duck at reasonably close range for the first time. There have been Freckled Duck on the large QSW (ACT) pond for most of the year. I checked just now and there was at least one, along with 90 Pink-ears. This is half the distance to Gungahlin, measured from the National Parliament. None of this is intended to belittle the splendid Gungahlin Freckled Duck which will no doubt allow more intimate views. Finally managed to see it on my return visit to the pond .... my first freckled duck! I have been reporting this duck for a week or two now and glad someone with a decent camera has captured it! Adds to the point I frequently make that Gungahlin has interesting sites for birding and more than its share of rare species. A rather obliging Freckled Duck at The Valley Ponds (intersection of The Valley Avenue and Gungahlin Drive) this morning. ******************************************************************************************************* This is the email announcement and discussion list of the Canberra Ornithologists Group.
