Yes I see why it sparked attention. It is attractive.
Shape shows that it is from the mid to right side of the tail of something. The colour pattern show it to be from a Laughing Kookaburra. Very distinctive and quite certain.
 
Historically interesting word use from you. It is by definition exactly the length of a pen. As "pen" is of course is a modern use for a writing implement with ink in that pen means feather, as in pennate or the species name of Falco longipennis (long feather).

Hi i found this feather in the Eucalypts Forest in Tidbinbilla yesterday. It's about the length of a pen. Does anyone know what it could belong to?
