About
6 p.m. yesterday a Koel was calling closer to home than I have noticed for most
of the last 3 weeks. So I went out to track it down. A female was found first,
in the trees in front of the house nearly opposite mine, then a male arrived,
both flew away across the local park where it took me about 10 minutes to track
her down again in trees in the divider of Boddington Cres. The female was
clearly communicating with another Koel. When she changed her call to a rather
different grating sound, a male Koel flew towards us, shrieking as he arrived,
with a fluttering (very fast flapping) flight. She flew towards where the male
perched and 2 Red Wattlebirds pursued them both, then it became hard to follow
who was chasing who. Last year they had a successful breeding here and I and
Geoffrey obtained many photos of the young bird.

I heard my first Koel for the season around my Weston garden
on Saturday morning.
