The image linked below shows very clearly the difference between photographing a bird in the light versus a bird in the shadow.  Both these birds are in the same frame, and it is a genuine case of “other things being equal”.  The only difference between them is one had the sun shining on it and the other was flying through the shadow of a tree.  I confess to moving them a little closer together to save pixels, but in every other respect, they have received the same exposure etc.  The relevant data is below.  As you can see, it was very early in the morning.
