"My" pair of Tawny Frogmouths started their nest building yesterday 20/8/2013. This was, even by their standards, a sparse effort with about 10 twigs positioned. However last evening while escorting the small dog outside one of the birds landed on the twig-endowed lawn and flew up into the nest tree. This morning the nest is far more substantial.
Other than the excitement of the process starting up again there are two points of interest:
- After 2 years of nesting in a Eucalyptus macrorhynca the birds have returned to their former site (exactly the same fork) in a E, meliodora. This is a Good Thing as I can watch proceedings from my study window!
- The event commenced 2 weeks after Stuart Rae posted advice that "his" Frogmouths had started nesting. This is another example of natural events in out block being 2 weeks later than Canberra, which appears to reflect a rule - or at least guideline - of Spring being deleyaed by one week per 100m elevation change.
