Whilst waiting
for friends at my front gate (Yass River bwtween Murrumbateman and Gunning)
Sunday lunchtime a pair of Diamond Firetails started foraging in short grass in the shade of an
Applebox coming within 5m of me. Then a pair of Sthn Whiteface joined them. Then
a Brown Treecreeper. Would have all been in the one view if I had binoculars
with me! Also a pair of Jacky Winters on the adjacent cattle yards calling
madly.
Talking about
in one view, the Red-Capped Robins are back in the same place as on the COG trip
a few autumns ago and the male was making sure the Scarlet Robins (which there
have been heaps of btw) didn't come too close to his territory. Still no sign of
the Hooded Robins that were common during the dry 2000's. Haven't seen
any since the droughts broke....
Also close
views of female Spotted Quail Thrush whilst digging out thistles and tussock.
Consistent migrating Yellow Faced HE's may possibly have heard a few White-naped
for the first time this weekend. Rufous Whistlers, Orioles still hanging around.
Hordes of Grey Fantails with every mixed feeding flock of Thornbills but
the Speckled Warblers are staying in their family groups and not joining in.
Grey Currawongs, Shrike Thrushes and Grey Butcherbirds being very vocal. Plenty
of Spinebills too even though the Mistletoe has stopped
flowering.
