Jerry Olsen has drawn attention to the Aranda/Black Mountain work on calling and duelling described in Aust Field Ornithology 2007. A little large to send as a PDF, but I have extracted the below table -

Hi Geoffrey
Fig 2 in the attached shows the timing of calling in the ACT. A little spike in autumn, males stay on territory, females often move for the winter. Send it along if you wish.

There was a Boobok calling on the ANU campus last night at 11:15, as well. Could there be some territorial activity with the onset of colder weather?

I think as far as we know they don't move away from our area but they do call more in spring which increases their recording rate at that time and less in cold times of year which reduces their recording rate at that time. Bearing in mind the way they will be observed, the difference between the graphs on the COG Atlas & GBS report show this.

I heard a Boobook brifely at about 10.15pm this evening in Mawson. I haven't heard one here before, although I have heard them in Canberra every now and then. Are the Boobools likely to be moving to warmer climes like many other species?
