Just to thank very much all of you whom responded to me on this, including
quite a number who responded to me directly rather than on the site . I ended
up ordering a Nikon monarch dcf (or series 5) 8x42 from digital direct for $301
including postage . This ended up cheaper and easier than a US site , due to
high postage from US. I nearly got a Vanguard endeavor Ed , which had a bigger
field of view and a good feel, but was heavier and slightly harder to focus as
the full focus was over 3/4 turn rather than 1 1/4 turn with Nikon. My
research concluded than as a highly dependent glasses person, glass friendly
was a critical issue and in addition to having eye relief of 19 mm or better ,
having twist rather than slide or roll up eyepieces was important . I would
have paid more, but the research I did suggested that I would have to leap up a
huge$ step to get a worthwhile improvement to Zeiss or Swarovski territory .
Maybe that's for later. Thanks again
