Further to Anthony Overs comment about the "Cricket like trill" of young Boobooks, I agree.

Also the silhouette image clearly shows it is not a Frogmouth (the other common nocturnal bird in the Canberra region). Shape is wrong, and the upright stance, with long legs fits a Boobook Owl, in my opinion.

On two early (c. 9 pm) evenings  in the last few days in Toms Crescent, Ainslie, two birds have been first heard (with repeated "chrring" calls over a longish period), and then briefly seen on power lines, and power poles, and flitting (hawking insects??) between them. The birds seem (the light was very poor and I had no flashlight) to be about the size of boobooks. However, the calls, to my ears, were unlike any owl or frogmouth calls that I've heard.
Do they ring a bell to anyone  - perhaps juvenile calls?  (I was intrigued by Jenny Smits note re "trilling" of Barking Owls earlier today).

I tried a snap photo but it is so poor it doesnt  help  - except to suggest a vaguely owlish shape?
