Hi Robin,
The photo appears to show the outline of a Southern Boobook. Booboks have
quite a range of calls including the "chrrring" call you refer to. I also
think that the birds recorded in Deakin by (I think) two observers are also
Southern Boobooks. Perhaps someone could pass these emails on the Jerry
Olsen for comment.
Cheers,
Mark

Subject: Nocturnal visitors - ID advice
On two early (c. 9 pm) evenings in the last few days in Toms Crescent,
Ainslie, two birds have been first heard (with repeated "chrring" calls over
a longish period), and then briefly seen on power lines, and power poles,
and flitting (hawking insects??) between them. The birds seem (the light was
very poor and I had no flashlight) to be about the size of boobooks.
However, the calls, to my ears, were unlike any owl or frogmouth calls that
I've heard.
Do they ring a bell to anyone - perhaps juvenile calls? (I was intrigued
by Jenny Smits note re "trilling" of Barking Owls earlier today).
I tried a snap photo but it is so poor it doesnt help - except to suggest
a vaguely owlish shape?
