Birdline ACT

Published sightings for the week ending 27 Jan 2013.

Sun 27 Jan Red-chested Button-Quail Mulligan's Flat Sanctuary
I happened upon a group of 5 Red-chested Button-Quail this afternoon in tall Joycea pallida at Mulligan's Flat Sanctuary. One bird was larger and more brightly coloured than the rest, with a dark eye-stripe and crown with narrow but distinct pale coronal stripe, greyish cheeks and side of neck, and brick-red throat and upper breast. Four smaller birds, about the typical size of Little Button-Quail showed less contrasting plumage but with red-ochre breast and vent.

Painted Honeyeater Yankee Hat carpark, Namadgi National Park, ACT
10:20 h. One female Painted Honeyeater foraging on dead branches of old eucalypt at edge of forest just to east of carpark. Good views in full sunshine over about five minutes. Didn't hear any vocalisation. Several times she was harassed by a Fuscous Honeyeater which clearly didn't like her being around.

Thu 24 Jan Common Greenshank Mulligans Flat Nature Reserve, Gungahlin
Common Greenshank Seen on SE corner of dam. About twice the size of BF Dotterel, yellow legs, dark bill, white underneath, grey-brown back, feint striation on back of neck. Chased off by dots, as it took off to the north it gave a distinctive two-note call. About 5 mins later I observed another bird, but it could well have been the same one. It also flew off in a northerly direction, calling. [Moderator's note: this bird was subsequently also seen and identified by Steve Holliday and Scott Ryan; and later in the day by several other observers. It was still present at sunset. FA]

Yellow-billed Spoonbill National Zoo and Aquarium
Yellow-billed Spoonbill (1) flying over at 7am, heading towards Lake Burley Griffin. [Moderator's comment: it seems likely that this may be the same bird as recorded recently at Giralang Pond - it was absent from that location this morning. FA]
