Australian Painted Snipe
Forde Ponds
At 1345 hrs this afternoon I saw a male Australian Painted Snipe at the . The bird was seen in a small wet depression behind the shallow pond obvious from Horse Park Drive and in front of the main pond driving from the direction of Goorooyarroo NR on HPD. It was with two Latham’s Snipe and several Masked Lapwings.

Pied Cormorant
Kellys Swamp, Jerrabomberra Wetlands
2 Pied Cormorants observed during an extended visit this morning.
All four species of cormorant were observed:
6 Great, 2 Little Pied and 2 Little Black.
This is the first time in years that I have observed all four species of cormorant in one visit.

Intermediate Egret
Kellys Swamp
There were at least 5 Intermediate Egrets at Kellys Swamp this afternoon between 4 and 5 pm. Foraging fairly warily in the green out from Ardea hide. Also 1 Great Egret to provide excellent comparison of size, neck length and foraging behaviour (at the edge of the water). There was also another egret roosting high in a tree - I think it was a Great Egret (it was hunched most of the time so difficult to be sure) and I'm pretty sure there was another egret (possibly another Intermediate) hiding in the foliage of the Nankeen Night Heron trees. I've not seen that many Intermediate Egrets in Canberra before.
The four Royal Spoonbills also flew in during the period, so there was a lot of white on the swamp.

Black Falcon
West Belconnen Landfill, Parkwood Road.
While travelling as a passenger I noticed a medium-sized, dark raptor perched on a boundary fence post. We approached slowly and, using the truck as a hide, I focussed my binoculars on the bird for about 45 seconds from 30 metres away, and identified it as a Black Falcon. When another vehicle drove across my line of sight the falcon flew quite high, caught a thermal, and soared away to the south west.

Diddams Close Park, Lake Ginninderra
Crested Shrike-tit (1) A single bird in the carpark at the western end of Diddam's Close. It was eating insects in the gums in the traffic island in the middle of the carpark.

Olive Whistler (1) Foraging under bracken on roadside. Bird appeared dark in the undergrowth, grey head with subtle pale bib. Near the 'U' bend in Warks Rd.

Lewin's Rail, Baillon's Crake, Australian Spotted Crake
Namadgi Visitors Centre Dam
Lewin's Rail (1) Heard call from below dam wall, waited for nearly an hour to hear call again. Bird was in damp area with thick tussock grass. Small glimpse, smaller than Buff-banded Rail. 2 Baillon's Crake foraging in open on top of weed at Southern end of dam. 1 Australian Spotted Crake.
