We are well aware of the general decline in woodland bird species in SE
Australia and, sadly, in the last several years I have noticed a sharp
decline in Brown Treecreepers, Hooded Robins and Restless Flycatchers in
the ACT. The most recent addition to this unfortunate set appears to be
Southern Whiteface. They seem to have disappeared from places I have
been accustomed to seeing them for many years. Obviously, the anecdotes
of a single observer are not a robust basis for drawing conclusions. It
would be good to hear from other local birdwatchers in this regard.
The ACT has retained woodland habitat in its Nature Park network but
these species appear to have deserted us!
