I think this photo is interesting. Look at the toe arrangement in relation to the perch. Jerry Olsen and I have been discussing ‘zygodactyly’ in BSKs as described in a recent article in Australian Field Ornithology – the ability of some birds to bend back the outer toe, as a parrot perches. We have been looking for photographic examples especially in the Black-shouldered Kite. We have found some that are ‘close’ but show the outer toe more square-on, as in a ‘+’ formation. Perhaps someone has an example of a BSK gripping a wire or other slender perch with 2 toes on each side. If so, we’d be interested to see it.
