While I have no expertise on the disease risk of Flying Foxes, it is worth noting that we have been "running experiments" in many of Australia's eastern cities for many years without any known direct Flying Fox to human infection by Hendra virus. Flying Fox colonies are common in urban parks and gardens on the east coast from Cairns to Melbourne.
