Philip may be interested to know that there is already an unpublished record
of the Square-tailed Kite in COG's AOI. Back in October, either in 1989 or
1990, (unfortunately I can't remember the exact date) Richard Allen, Chris
Davey, Paul Mahoney and myself recorded a S-t K at Lowden Forest Park in the
then Tallaganda State Forest. We had been doing a recce for a "twitchathon"
type exercise and had camped in the reserve overnight. Interestingly we also
recorded a Sooty Owl that night and a Pied Butcherbird as we travelled to
the reserve. I have been meaning to write these records up for a long time
but have never managed to get around to it.
Interestingly, while working for CSIRO in the Bombala area around the same
time I found a S-t K nest next what is now part of the Coolangubra National
Park (CSIRO unpublished data). The nest tree was knocked down as part of the
NSW State Forest's work clearing native vegetation to be replaced with Pinus
radiata. I found a dead nestling on the ground but unfortunately it was "too
far gone" to keep as a specimen. Several years later I found another nest
close by; one wonders if the birds were the same as the one seen at
Tallaganda! It was the work done by the late Wayne Braithwaite, Tony Wolfe
and myself in this area that convinced NSW S F that they should NOT be
clearing native vegetation, especially such high value faunal habitat, to
plant pine trees.
Perhaps now I will get around to write the records up.

I keep hoping. They do migrate into SE NSW & Eastern Victoria for the
summer. So it is worth checking out what vaguely looks like an odd Spotted
Harrier, with short legs and a white face, flying slowly over trees.

I observed a single Square-tailed Kite at Woodstock cemetery (20 km east of
Cowra, NSW), at about 2 pm. Flying low just above treetop level, as commonly
seen.
Also up to 30 Superb Parrots observed during the time I was there, landing
in the white box trees and very noisy. I have seen Superb Parrots at this
location each time I have been there.
