Hi Canberran Birders,
I am based in Sydney but I have been subscribing to this group since I worked
for a year in Belconnen in 2009. Lately I started a new job in Tuggeranong and
this late afternoon I visited Kelly's Swamp for the first time.
I arrived late around 7pm+ and had visited all 3 hides Ardea, Bittern and
Cygnus.
Cygnus hide - 2 L Snipes. A pair of small green parrots drinking at water edge
south of hide.
Bittern Hide - Aus Spotted Crake, Latham's Snipe and ~ 5 Rufous Night Herons
when almost dark.
Regarding the small green parrots I could have dismissed as Red rump but I did
not notice any red on rump and also both were about same green unlike red rump
where the female is significantly duller. So I took a record shot in poor
lighting of one of them as my main target was the L Snipe. Back at my bed later
I reviewed the photo and thought it looks more like a Turquoise Parrot.
Following are some points
1) Nape and mantle olive brown
2) Forehead and cheek cyan blue
3) Breast rich yellow with pale yellow extend up to chin (Red rump has clearly
demarcated green throat and yellow belly)
4) very fine maroon patch on upper shoulder but this can be due to shadow.
5)No signs of rich blue on wing, folded primary appear dark. Not supportive.
I am only able to download the photo in the weekend in Sydney if necessary. I
am familiar with Red-rump but am not aware of recent report of Turquoise in
Canberra.
Hope someone can help clarify this. My last sighting of Turquoise Parrot was 7
years ago of a pair on Capertee Valley.
Thanks.
