Koel?

Hi Mariko

The Eastern Koel is famously annoying for its night-time (and early morning) calling.
  • "The male Common Koel advertises its presence by a loud ascending whistle or 'koo-el', monotonously repeated; the call of the female is a repetitive 'keek-keek-keek-keek'. Males often call throughout the day and well into the night."
  • You may find a recording at this site:
  • There are three calls recorded there. Only one is clear to me as the male - the upwardly-inflected "ko-el" call. The final call on this recording is Keek-keek-keek-keek is presumably the female. The final one is presumably the female.
  • I am not sure (and I leave it to others to advise) which sex is responsible for the more subdued call in the middle of the recording (from 11 seconds to 17 seconds). I have always assumed that was a female's call. I can't explain why one call is so much more frenetic than the other.

Cheers

Hi, everyone,
Last night when I woke up I heard a bird call which sounded like coo ee several times.  Then I remember that people were talking about a koel.  I have never heard a koel's call.  Do they call at night and is it possible to hear it in Hughes?  Or I was dreaming. It was a hot night.
