A week ago Welcome Swallows commenced nest building in the toilet block at the rear of Kippax shopping centre, above the Kippax Playing Fields. A few days later I noticed that some Neanderthals had soaked toilet paper in a hand basin, wadded it into  balls and pelted them at the swallows. Many of the soggy missiles had landed along the beam upon which the swallows were nest building, and one had landed in the partly completed nest. Nonetheless the doughty little birds still laboured away at their task.

I wanted to catch the Neanderthals – hopefully small and puny Neanderthals –jam their heads in the basin – not the hand basin, the other one that’s built closer to the floor with a seat attached, and activate the flush button!

Anyhow a few days later I noticed that the paper balls had been cleared from the beam and the nest. Probably the work of a kindly cleaner, and I thought I could see a bird sitting on the nest. So I wish the swallows well.
