Echidnas hibernate but in the high country have the strange habit of emerging 
while there is still substantial snow on the ground.  I've seen them several 
times active in the snow.  I took the attached photo of an echidna track (the 
sweeping marks of the long rear claws are very evident) this week near Perisher.
