Yes they don't usually form groups like that. Though I have occasionally (not regularly) seen several adults gather around and make a lot of noise at the stage when chicks are fledging from the nest and that seemed curious to me. Don't know if that is relevant. Other thought is did you check for presence of an owl or something like that? I suppose you didn't find that or you would have commented on it.

08:45 hrs today I was attracted to a flurry of movement accompanied by much chirping and twittering coming from our large apricot tree. Turned out to be about 8 to twelve brownish birds all jizzed up like female or immature Common Blackbirds, which is what I believe they were. Been watching Common Blackbirds since I was about 15 but never seen them flock before. Incidentally, there was a remarkable number of active blackbird nests in our area last spring and summer.
