I hope people don't mind this group email, in the interests of efficiency.
You have probably heard about the open cut mines that have been
proposed near Cullen Bullen in Ben Bullen State Forest (and proposed
Gardens of Stone Stage 2 reserve - GoS2). The Coalpac Consolidation
Project and Pinedale exansion together propose to destroy about 1300
ha of forest and threaten superb pagoda terrain. More proposals will
probably follow.
Local communities and conservation groups are vigorously opposing
these open-cut developments. I have been asked by the GoS2 committee
(an alliance of BMConSoc, Colong Foundation and Lithgow Enviro Group)
to prepare a small print run colour book to highlight the natural
values of the forest. The idea is to use this 'lobby book' to
influence politicians and other decision makers. I am doing this as
a volunteer, and also providing complimentary photos. I am now
chasing more images.
My particular purpose in writing to you folk is to try and get some
wildlife images to include in the book, which are sorely needed and
hard to find (I have one - a Broad-headed Snake).
Are you able and willing to help? All images will of course be
acknowledged, and all contributors will get a copy of the book.
Since wildlife images are 'generic', they don't have to be from the
subject area, as long as the species is found there (and the shot
isn't too obviously from somewhere else, or in an urban/rural
setting). 'Iconic' and threatened spp are best of all. And I'd love
to include some wildlife sketches/artwork as well as photos.
If you can help, please get back to me and I'll send you details
including a list of spp.

Subject: Fauna images
Thanks so much for offering images to assist the case against
open-cut coal mining in the proposed Gardens of Stone reserve.
I have now waded through the enviro assessment docs and come up with
a list of proven inhabitants that might be good to include in the
'lobby book' (see below).
It includes both threatened and 'common' species.
We really need to show that this isn't just a beautiful
landscape/patch of bush, but its alive with a rich diversity of
animals and plants - and well over 1000 ha of their habitat will be
eliminated.
Many thanks for anything you can come up with. You can email small
jpegs initially if you like, but I will eventually (ie. soon) need
full res tiffs (or reasonably high res jpegs at least) for any
selected images, which can be sent to my address below. What I use
will depend on what I can get!
