I just thought I would mention that the Audubon Birds Field Guide app (for iphone, ipad, android, whatever) is on sale at the moment for all of $1 (usually $20). As I lived in the States for a while and plan to go back I figure it's a pretty good investment and I thought I would pass on the word.
Investigate or ignore as you see fit.
On another note, if anyone is planning a trip to the US I have field guides that I am happy to lend out.
