We saw sulphur cresteds doing that very thing today on Black Mountain peninsula during ANU Bird Survey.

Cockatoo pairs keep an eye on likely hollows all through the winter and make periodic inspections and renovations so they can be ready to breed in spring. I've seen Galhas do a similar thing what you're describing in April.
