They are devices which emit a vibration into the ground which apparently snakes don't like so avoid the area. They have been rather successful in our vegetable garden - we still have a dog. Other people have maintained a desirable (according to them) number of grandchildren. I don't offer the following http://www.snakerepellent.com.au/ as a promotion of the specific model but to answer Mark's question. It is very similar to the devices we have used for two Summers. Something has greatly reduced the number of snakes - but not lizards - in our yard. (They must be selling well as the price has dropped by 50% since our initial purchase.)
