While cycling along Purdie St in Bruce this morning, we flushed a
Bronzewing pigeon which flew parallel to us about 15m away for a couple
of seconds and then flew across the road in front of us and disappeared
in the direction of the Bruce CIT campus. From the overall impression of
the colour being a rich chestnut brown and the patterning not being
particularly scaly, I would have said Brush Bronzewing rather than
Common Bronzewing. The one feature we both noticed was a dark band
across the end of the tail. However, here our field guides part company
with each other. Pizzey shows the Brush Bronzewing and not the Common
Bronzewing having the dark band across the tail, Simpson & Day (7th Ed.)
shows both birds as having it, but slightly more pronounced on the
Common Bronzewing.
Looking at the photos of the two species on the COG web site, the female
in this photo is closest to what we saw:
