Spotting Scopes

Hi All – I have put a spotting scope on my Christmas list and of course the obvious question comes up – what sort of scope would be best? Without putting people to too much trouble can someone guide me on the type of scope to buy for general use but particularly at bird sitting areas/hides etc. If the one you use is proving good it would be very helpful to us to know the type and features and best place to buy.
