Today (Wednesday 19 Oct) at 5:15pm, a male and female Painted Snipe were resting (and preening for a short while) on the eastern side at the southern end of Kellys Swamp. They were still there at 6:30pm.

I took a couple of distant snaps for the record, which I had not bothered with for my report of the male on 13 Oct.

Regards,
Leo.

I watched the P.S. late afternoon of 15 October. at 18.10 h, when I arrived, one female was feeding in the open , moving from the SW, to S, then along the E shore, and ended up almost in line with the new signs by the time I left. At 18.35 h 1 male and 1 female appeared on the far side between 2 sets of dead sticks, then  moved a short distance along the shore, feeding, and shortly after, still probing the ground, disappeared into the grass. The birds did not come out within the next 5 min, when I left.

4 (at least).  It?s possible the male hasn?t been in view since 5 Oct -  unless someone has a definite ID since then.

G?day Geoffrey,

B2 is a definite female so you have four birds based on the images below, they all look adult to me.

This species seems to be popping up all over the place, just goes to prove the contributing factor to their threatened status is simply lack of wet habitat inland which is overcome to some degree in a year of above average rainfall. Wouldn?t it be fantastic if all the drained ephemeral wetlands of Australia could be reinstated, in many cases a farmer with a shovel would be all that?s required.

Cheers Jeff.
