Martin says the last two Black-shouldered Kites I have seen in the area were also patterned in this way. On face value I am guessing that would be recent. I suggest it would be likely that these are the same two individual birds. If so, it is likely one local breeding event. It would need a wider distribution of occurrences to get interesting results of the proportions etc of that kind.

Geoffrey's comment about the rufous collars on the BSKs causes me to recall that the last two Black-shouldered Kites I have seen in the area were also patterned in this way.  as there seems to have been something resembling an irruption of this species it might be interesting to get views on what proportion of the birds are adult or juvenile/immature.

More plumage notes from this morning.  Great Egret has plumes, but with yellow bill not yet in breeding condition.  Glossy Ibis still there but not very glossy in dull light.  Whitish mottling suggests non-breeding, perhaps young, bird.  Pacific Heron has maroon breeding colour in wings.  Pair of BSKs not a pair but from rufous collars probably 2 wandering young from last season.
