Non-migratory red wattlebirds

I have attached a graph of values equivalent to A (average number per observer week) for Red Wattlebirds (RWBs) for each week over the 29 processed years of the GBS.  Week 17 (the first major peak) is mid-late April and Week 37 (next peak) is early mid September.

It is a bit different to Paul Fennell's graph and to my mind shows the two migration movements with Autumn more pronounced than the backwards movement.  There are still a fair number of birds around in all weeks.

These are the Reporting Rates (sightings per month/Surveys per month), using data going back to 1974.  As you can see, the lowest rates are in April and October, but the rates through the middle of winter are quite high.

I would be interested to hear people’s views as to why this pattern has emerged from the data.

Cheers

There is a banksia tree in Wanniassa that commences flowering in autumn, and flowers through winter.  A couple of red wattlebirds have lived permanently near that tree since I moved in in 1998.  Other RWBs are to be found nearby all the year round also.  I am surprised to hear they are migratory.
