This article http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2011/aug/29/academic-publishers-murdoch-socialist?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed:+theguardian/commentisfree/rss+%28Comment+is+free%29 is an interesting commentary on a difficulty I often face when trying to research material.  At one point someone suggested that some journals are allowing authors to make their material available for  no charge.  I followed this up with one publisher (but cannot remember which): in that case the material became free to the reader if (and only if) the author paid the publisher approximately $3000!
