Yesterday (22/8/2011) at Lake Ginninderra.

,

Western shores

-Beissel St- A juvenile White Bellied Sea Eagle flew over me, quite close. Interesting white wing stripes. Was being chased by 4 ravens. A Little Grassbird called 4 times. BFCS, GST, 2 White plumed Honeyeaters, 1 YFH, 6 swallows and 1 Tree Martin circled. E cinerea in flower.

,

-Macdermott Pl (Boat ramp).  3 Domestic ducks (white). 1 Little Grassbird calling loudly and surprisingly tame (on the south side of the Bay). 1 GST, 1 WF heron. 11 White plumes. 6 Mynas. 9 starlings. 4 swallows. A pair of swans with 2 small cygnets. 2 silver gulls. 2 CP.

,

-Yerra Park and North- 1 Reed warbler- quiet, very tame I got to within 4m. 50 silvereyes passed over heading West (2 flocks). 7 White plumes. A flock of 6 white winged choughs. 6 Masked lapwings

,

LG Penninsula

-Diddams. 1 Reed Warbler calling loudly.

-Cormorant corner- Most of the large Cormorant roosting trees have been chopped and mulched but there were still 2 darters. 2 Red brows. 3 kangaroos. 1 LP and 1 LB cormorant flew over. 22 swallows. 1 GST.

-East side/dog run- 1 Little Grassbird. Blackbird. Moorhen with 1 very large begging juvenile.

,

John Knight MP- 1 Aust grebe, 13 SC cockatoos including 1 begging juvenile. 1 swan. 1 Reed warbler. 1 grey currawong. 6 redbrows. By then it was getting dark, the reeds look good and may host many reed warblers and LG this year.

,

Other usual water birds were abundant everywhere- eg moorhens, swamphens, coots, black and wood ducks. I’m wondering whether a lack of surveying and the fact reed warblers and L grassbirds are quieter in winter is the reason for them not being recorded in winter in addition to migration.
