What birds are in the habit of singing in the wee hours of the morning? No, it 
wasn't a cuckoo. About 3 am, twice this week, I could hear a  melody of five 
clear, not chortled,whistled notes repeated over a long period every 8 seconds 
or so. Magpie? butcherbird. Two descending notes then up to a higher note and 
three more descending notes. I couldn't drag myself out of bed to investigate 
with a torch...
