I am forwarding a message from Renee Ferster Levy (who attended a WW a while back) about an upcoming talk in Sydney on the .birds of Lowe Howe Island.  (And Sea Eagle Cam - brilliant to see the birds while it is still dark!!)

As the brochure is >1Mb it is against the rules for this line but here is the text:

Conservation Wins and Challenges for Birdlife on Lord Howe Island

A talk by Ian Hutton, OAM, naturalist, guide and author

2 pm, Sunday 7 August Building 22, Newington Armory, Sydney Olympic Park.

Ian will present a brief history of Lord Howe Island, including introduced animals and the effect on the birdlife; details of the Woodhen rescue (one of most successful captive bird breeding projects in the world); extra benefits for all birdlife of eradicating cats and pigs from the island; challenges with rat eradication; other threats to seabirds - long line fishing and plastic ingestion - and finish with best locations and times to visit seabird colonies.

There will be a display of wonderful underwater images from Lord Howe Island by John Johnstone.

A silent auction will be held, including an artwork by 2011 Sulman Prize Finalist, Philip Hunter Lindsay – depicting Lord Howe Island "Descending Mt Gower, 1975 with John Disney, Dr Peter Fullagar and Dr John Pickard ".

 Great raffle prizes:

1st prize – a night at peaceful Redbrow Gardens B&B. With its bushy hillside, lake and dense plantings it is a birdwatcher’s paradise, as well as offering farm fresh eggs, herbs, and berry picking in summer. www.canberraguesthouse.com.au

2nd prize – a beautiful framed bird picture

3rd prize – a book from Andrew Isles

Afternoon tea will be provided.

Bookings essential - please phone Pixie on 96471033. Gold coin donation.

Hi Jack and Martin,

Ian Hutton from Lord Howe Island is coming to the Birds Australia Discovery Centre to talk about the birdlife on August 7. Would it be possible to pass the flyer on to COG and other networks please? I hope some of you can make it.

You may have heard that a pair of Sea Eagles have again nested in the woodland adjacent to the Discovery Centre? They are incubating 2 eggs, and with the high definition camera on them, it is amazing! You can see highlights at:

and live streaming (day and night!) at:

Thanks,
Best regards,
Renée
