Midge-like insects

Does any one know what they are – they’ve been seen suspended in the air in big clumps at up to head height this weekend, particularly in sheltered (and sunny – when it was out) spots.  They don’t seem to bother you when you walk/run through them, though they can get into the eyes.
Don’t seem to be good bird food either, as I didn’t see any near them.
