Hi Margaret,

My vote is for a Cattle Egret, they are known to be there sometimes (more normally in groups). The Little Egret has a black beak, is more elegant or slender in shape and as far as I know, only feeds in water (in a rapid moving manner) and not in mown grass.

This egret was picking around in the mown grassy area beside the parking area at Jerrabomberra Wetlands this morning.  It was about the size of a purple swamphen, and would be the smallest egret I have seen at close quarters.
