Hi Elizabeth and everyone
I originally fixed on 11am-12noon as a time for the Gang-Gang survey
through my observation of GG and other cockatoo behaviour. My
observation is that cockatoos seem to spend the morning moving from
food source to food source but finally settle on a good one around the
middle of the day (in winter) and stay there for several hours. If we
do the survey around the middle of the day we will observe GGs at
their midday food source and there is less likelihood of multiple
counting from different observers seeing the same group at different
locations.
There is also the human behaviour aspect to consider: I imagine most
people would be happier doing the survey around midday on a cold
winter's day!
However, I'm happy to have others express a view on an earlier start
and moving the survey if enough people agree.
cheers
