Possibly the attached view from Fulica hide illustrates Chris's use of the word 'strange'. Even stranger was the sight of 6 White-faced Herons perched on the phone wires opposite Tadorna hide. Presumably they, and the Whistling Kite perched in a remnant willow (musn't get your wellies wet when chopping things down), were wondering what the heck happened to their homes. In the photograph people will notice the clump of water lilies in the foreground. This is I believe a nastily invasive species (can't remember the reference that led me to that conclusion) and there are several patches of about this size between the two hides. Nothing seems to be being done about them. I had wondered if there was a size criterion to be met before CNP acts to remove weeds: something like "requires a chainsaw to remove". Then I looked at the size of the thistles in various parts of the area (and along Molongo Reach) and decided they met that criterion but were still surviving OK. So it must be something more subtle. I was getting too depressed in the Wetlands so wandered across to the Sewage works where there were few waterbirds (and those there were nearly all Australasian Grebes). Things improved when I became aware of two Black-fronted Dotterels on some nice exposed mud in pond 5. I haven't seen these around for sme time until I found a couple yesterday in the Hoskinstown Plain. Martin On Tue, May 3, 2011 at 8:59 AM, Hastir, Chris <> wrote:
