You should not be dismissive of the first entrance to Kelly Rd.  There are usually many good birds (often most of the usual suspects from further down the road, plus others)  to be seen there - park soon after crossing the railway line there.

Although well-known to COG members over some years, this corner of nearby New South Wales was, for some reason, omitted from the informative series “Places familiar to all Canberrans”, an omission to be rectified in any future edition.  Go down the Monaro Highway about 4km past Williamsdale and take either the l-hand track marked “Kelly Road”, or the second one just past a tasteful assemblage of advertising billboards.  The second one takes you, just across the disused rail line, to the traditional area of interest.  Do not look for a splendid vista of Australian bushland.  The roadside vegetation is the main feature for present purposes but the TSR, apparently now used for routine pastoral purposes, can also be interesting.  If your natural walking pace matches the distance between the sleepers, you might also take the opportunity for a stroll down the rail line.
