Hi Peter
There is no discernable honeyeater
migration in Tasmania.
I have no doubt that there would be altitudinal migrations on a small scale as
the Crescent HE are present in the mountains during summer along with the
endemic species (Yellow-throated, Black-headed and Strong-billed). The other
two species (Tawny-crowned and New Holland) appear to stick to their coastal
heath environment. I am not aware that any migrate to the mainland, although a
lot of small birds do (Pink Robin, Satin Flycatcher, the cuckoos, Silvereyes,
Blue-winged and Orange-bellied Parrots, Welcome Swallows, etc.
I visit Tassie every year and this trip I
was amazed at the numbers of small birds in evidence compared with the past few
years. This time last year Rhonda and I drove along the length of a road in
the Derwent Valley looking for Dusky Robins and
could find only three in the return trip. Last week I drove half way along the
same road and counted 50 in flocks of 8-10. It had obviously been a good
season. Also, I have never seen so many Grey Fantails as there were along all
the streams (kept me entertained while I was fishing).
Regards
Lindsay
