David - the Albatross you inquired about is a Shy Albatross. From your
bird book check the
beak & the under wing pattern, especially the thin line of black
feathers. Good to hear that you
visited the Royal Albatross colony. I was there nearly 30 years ago &
we had a distant view of
one bird at a nest. The Kiwis were very excited. I enjoyed that
peninsula but hadn't heard of the
penguins that breed there!! Compare the Shy & Royal in your bird book.
Peter - in order as per the email the photos were -
1 - a front on view of a Buller's Albatross.
2 - a Shy Albatross.
3 - a Buller's Albatross, more side on.
4 - the rare sighting of a Great Shearwater.
Phillip - I think our sighting of this shearwater is the 8th. in Aust.
waters. Dan was ecstatic.
These birds range between Southern South America & South Africa in a
latitude range from about
Eden to south of Tasmania (I stand to be corrected).
For those people interested, I have been told of a website where you can
read a report on the COG
pelagic trips 5th. & 6th. March.

I have attached another photo of this shearwater, taken at a distance &
then cropped.
Steve.
