The white phase Grey Goshawk reported earlier today by Peter Christian was
still present at about 2.30pm.
I had to go out to do some shopping so thought I might go to Kippax for a
change and take a quick drive down the road past the tip and Parkwood, in the
vaguest of off-chances of seeing the goshawk. I drove about 100 metres past the
turning for Parkwood (that's the farm, not Parkwood Eggs) and pulled over to
see if I could spot a Stubble Quail that was calling close to the road. No luck
with the quail (there were several calling in the area) but I looked over
towards Parkwood and there sitting in a dead tree along a creek line was a
large white bird. I couldn't believe it could possibly be the goshawk and spent
several minutes watching it to make doubly sure it wasn't a Sulphur-crested
Cockatoo! It was some distance away and I regretted not bringing my scope. I
watched it for about ten minutes while it preened and flew short distances to
other trees along the creek, being periodically harassed by Magpies,
Magpie-larks and a Black-shouldered Kite. I eventually lost sight of it when it
moved along the creek towards Ginninderra Falls. I went back later, after doing
the shopping at Woolies, and walked out across the paddock to get closer to the
creek, but there was no sign of the bird. It might still hang around, though,
so could be worth a look.... I've seen several normal grey Grey Goshawks, but
this was the first time I'd ever seen the white phase.

Frank Antram
