With Bob Rusk's earlier comments about the utility of Canberrabirds, may I use this opportunity to remind and encourage birders to contribute their ACT geographic sightings to Birdline ACT. If we were to use the model successfully adopted by other interstate bird groups, we would use Canberrabirds for all bird-related discussion and Birdline ACT for sightings.

The formal guidance for submitting a sighting to any of the Eremaea bird lines is 'rare or unusual birds outside their normal range, unusually high or low numbers, early or late arrivals or departures for migrant species and interesting behaviour or unusual habitat usage'. My advice is if you think your observation would be interesting to a wider audience, then please  submit to Birdline ACT. All sightings are moderated and either assigned 'highlight' or 'normal' status. The moderators (currently Frank Antram and I) may in some instances decide not to  post a sighting, in which case we will contact you to explain our reasoning. You can also submit photographs with your sighting (without any size restriction).

It is a very simple process to submit an observation. Go to  http://www.eremaea.com/BirdlineRecentSightings.aspx?Birdline=11 and click 'Add a sighting'. You do not have to be a member or register.

A major benefit to COG of you using Birdline ACT is that each submission is geocoded so that sighting, temporal and spatial information is collated and this data can be imported into the COG database. Presently there is no system to skim your reports from Canberrabirds to the database.

You can see what else has been submitted by visiting the site or by subscribing to the feed by use of an RSS reader. Or you can Register for weekly summary emails, species notifications and the opportunity to enter full lists.

Should you need any help at all with the site please contact me.

Give it a try.

Regards
Alastair
