Hi all

My family and I moved into a new home in Hawker a couple of weeks ago. So far the house species list stands at a modest 34. However, there are loads of birds here.

Some of the highlights so far here include:
  • Huge numbers of Silvereyes, often using the bird bath.
  • Many resident Eastern Spinebills feeding on the correas, and a persistently begging young one turned up with a female yesterday.
  • A group of at least six Superb Fairy-wrens roost in the large shrubs outside the bedroom window. There are two blue males, and today one was feeding a dependent young. Yesterday, as I sat watching them from the veranda, a bird hopped up on the step right next to my foot.
  • A juvenile Grey Fantail almost landed on my shoulder as I squeaked at it and the wrens.
  • A pair of White-browed Scrubwrens are here every day.
  • A family of five Laughing Kookaburras comes in to roost in a large eucalypt across the street in the evening.
  • A female Satin Bowerbird came through yesterday; our neighbour sees it often.

Other wildlife highlights include:
  • Several Peron's Tree Frogs on the windows in the evening. I can also hear Spotted Marsh Frogs two houses away.
  • A few large Garden Orb Weavers.
  • A couple of Brush-tailed Possums; dad lives in a nest box on one side of the house, mum lives in the neighbour's hedge on the other side, and she's carrying a single back young.
  • Two weeks before we moved in, a friend that lives further down the street saw an Echidna wandering through our new front yard (unfortunately it hasn't been back since we moved in!).

We are thoroughly enjoying the wildlife here!

Cheers
Anthony
