G'day Philip,

Thanks for the feedback. Last time in Canberra for me was 2003-2005. Agree common is a very loose term when discussing frequency of observations, I will try to be more specific in future e-mails,

Michael

Hello Michael,

Nice Koel picture.

About the Spotted Dove. I would suggest that their status has changed rather little although I don't know what was your last time in Canberra.  There are still small numbers around. You ask Are they now common? I would say no, although with the proviso that I can't define "common" and be sure we mean the same thing. The advantage of COG is that we have the GBS so if you and everyone else contributes to that, we can keep actual data to provide numbers to back up words like "common".

Subject: [canberrabirds] Koel in Nicholls

G'day Everyone,

I have recently moved back to Canberra and have been reading with interest the reports of birds in Canberra on this list. Since we moved in to our house in Nicholls in mid-Jan I have seen and heard Koels most mornings and even in the early evening. This morning one male allowed himself to be photographed in our front yard and while he was sitting there another male was calling to the south. I have also been walking around Gungahlin Pond regularly and have seen Koels on the western side every three days or so.

One other bird that I have noticed around here is the Spotted Dove. I recall from my last time in Canberra that there was some interest in their spread into the ACT. The most I have seen in one go is 3 although in the last week or so they have not been around. Are they now common?
